My eyes were opened this morning by this article in the Toronto Star on earth-friendly flowers.
I don’t know why it never occurred to me to ask where our cut flowers come from before, but it’s a question we should be asking. The issue is a big one, involving both ecological and human rights.
The eco-aware florist profiled in the article is Hatcher Florist of North Toronto, a family business. I like shopping local (you know I’m really thinking “locally” when I write that, don’t you?), and I like to support family businesses.
Something to think about on a day like today. Happy Valentine’s Day!

That’s a great article in the Star about the flower growing business. My eyes were opened to this in the film “Maria Full of Grace”. The young girl works in one of those greenhouses in Columbia. It’s a sweat shop. She’s pregnant (not visibly yet) and the owner won’t let her leave the floor to use the bathroom. She ends up quitting and in desperation getting a job from a “friend” as a drug mule. I’ve never been able to look at a bunch of roses in a flowershop the same way since.
